How you can help your friend using remote access assistance.
If his house is far away, or is not even from the same city or country like you, you need to use software for remote assistance.
Software that I use for remote control assistance.
TightVNC and Team Viewer.
One of the software that I use for remote assistance is TightVNC and the other one more easy to use is Team Viewer.
Both of them are free to use for personal use.

If you prefer to use TightVNC, you need to use a website to see what is your IP, I use whatismyip.com
TightVNC can be set-up to run as system service, by this way, even after restart you will have it running.
Don’t forget to close TightVNC after you use it, the password can be hacked.
Is not good if the computer is not setup to connect automatically to the internet, you could not make it to connect remotely.
I will not make here a detailed comparative view between the two programs, I will make that other time.
You offer to your friend the ID and the password you see in the program and they can connect and help you, with virus removal, software installation and so on.
If the firewall tells you that someone is trying to connect your computer when you use the software and you know that your friend has the connection details and will connect to your computer, give allow permission to the firewall. You could ask your friend IP before you giving allow to be sure that is him.
